Visitor information

Guided tours are available from March to the end of September. It is not permitted to heat the Castle due to it’s antiquity. Special arrangements may be possible for Clan members visiting from abroad during winter months.

All tours must be supervised and an appointment must be made by booking online. There is parking for 7 cars: please note that a visit and a parking space must be booked ahead of time.

All our excellent tour guides are authentically dressed in medieval costume. They are very knowledgeable and passionate about our history.

Visitor Film and Photography Information

Hunterston Castle and its grounds may be used as a backdrop for film and photography, including Wedding Photography. To discuss your shoot or find out more get in touch.

Do check our Accessibility before you book: there are few areas within the Castle where access is possible for visitors using a wheelchair or with limited mobility.

By Sea

Cruise ships dock at Greenock Ocean Terminal. Car hire can be arranged in advance at the terminal. Hunterston is about a 30 minute drive from Greenock.

By Car

Hunterston is on the A78 between Ardrossan to the south and Largs and Fairlie to the north. For your sat navigation use postcode KA23 9QG. It is approximately a 40 minute drive from Glasgow depending on traffic and a 40 minute drive from Ayr to the south.

By Train

Our nearest railway station is West Kilbride. There is a regular train service from Glasgow. Hunterston Castle is a 3 mile walk from the station. There are no buses to Hunterston, it is advisable to book Eddie’s Taxi in advance; contact details are +441294822812.

By Air

OPENING TIMES AND ACCESS

Acccess to Hunterston Castle is strictly by appointment. Note that as a historic monument, wheel chair access is limited. More visitor information is available on our visitors page .  Please email us to arrange a visit.
